Why Buying Has Changed
AI, higher RAM and SSD prices, soldered parts, and longer ownership cycles mean the old advice of “buy cheap and upgrade later” no longer works as well as it once did.
Do You Even Need a Laptop?
Many Boomers may be happier with an iPad for email, web browsing, banking, shopping, photos, YouTube, FaceTime, Zoom, reading, and light Microsoft 365 use.
The New Buying Rules
For Windows PCs, RGE recommends 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD as a practical minimum. If you expect to keep your laptop six years or longer, 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD are the better long-term investment.
Mac Buying Advice
Because Macs cannot be upgraded later, RGE recommends 16 GB unified memory and 512 GB SSD as the practical minimum for most buyers.
Refurbished Can Still Be Smart
Business-class refurbished laptops can still be excellent values, but buy the configuration you want up front. Don’t assume RAM or storage upgrades will be cheap later.
Avoid the Zombie Laptop
A Zombie Laptop is technically alive, but too expensive to improve. If an older 8 GB laptop needs costly upgrades, replacement may be the smarter move.
